Ground Shaking and Seismic Source Spectra for Large Earthquakes around the Megathrust Fault Offshore of Northeastern Honshu, Japan

چکیده
Large earthquake ruptures on or near the plate boundary megathrust fault offshore of northeastern Honshu, Japan, produce variable levels of regional highfrequency ground shaking. Analyses of 0.1–10 Hz strong ground motion recordings from K-NETand KiK-net stations and 0.3–3.0 Hz short-period recordings from Hi-net stations establish that the shaking variations result from a combination of differences in seismic source spectra and path attenuation. Eleven earthquakes with Mw 6.0–7.6 are analyzed, including interplate events at different positions on the megathrust within the rupture zone of the 11 March 2011 Tohoku (Mw 9.0) event and nearby intraplate events within the underthrusting Pacific slab. The relative ground shaking for frequencies of 5–10 Hz is strongest for the 7 April 2011 (Mw 7.2) intraslab event near the coast, followed by intraplate events beneath the outer-trench slope. Decreasing levels of high-frequency shaking are produced by interplate megathrust events moving from the down-dip edge of the seismogenic zone to the up-dip region near the trench. Differential attenuation measurements from averaged spectral ratios of strong-motion recordings indicate that average path attenuation is lower for events deeper on the megathrust or within the slab below the coast. Empirical Green’s function analysis isolates the source spectra for the passband 0.3–3.0 Hz, indicating higher corner frequencies for intraplate events and deep megathrust events than for shallow megathrust events. Similar differences in average source spectra are found for teleseismic Pwaves. Depth-varying source radiation and path attenuation thus account for the high-frequency shaking for the 2011 Tohoku mainshock originating from the down-dip portion of the megathrust. Introduction to the Special Issue on the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami
The 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake (05:46:24 UTC) involved a massive rupture of the plate-boundary fault along which the Pacific plate thrusts under northeastern Honshu, Japan. It was the fourth-largest recorded earthquake, with seismic-moment estimates of 3–5 × 10 N·m (Mw 9.0). The event produced widespread strong ground shaking in northern Honshu; in some locations ground accelerations excee...
متن کاملSeismic Behavior of Jacket Offshore Platform Subjected to Near and Far Field Ground Motions
Offshore structures such as jacket platforms have to inevitably be designed against sever environmental actions. In seismically active areas these structures also become susceptible to earthquake excitations. Strong ground motions recorded in recent earthquakes, including the 1995 Kobe, Japan, 1999 Chi-chi, Taiwan and 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquakes, revealed that the dynamic motions in nea...
متن کاملA Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran
Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...
متن کاملImprovement of Iranian Seismic Design Code Considering the Near-Fault Effects
Characteristics of ground motions close to the earthquake source can be considerably different from those of far-field motions which should be considered in design process of structures. The current study aimed to present new design response spectra for Iranian seismic design code taking into account the near-fault effects. For this purpose, a new attenuation relation based on the ground motion...
متن کاملThe Sanriku-Oki low-seismicity region on the northern margin of the great 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake rupture
[1] We examine a region of the megathrust fault offshore of northeastern Honshu (38.75°–40.25°N, 141.5°–143.25°E) that we designate as the Sanriku-Oki low-seismicity region (SLSR). The SLSR, located near the northern termination of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki (Mw 9.0) rupture, lacks historical great earthquake ruptures and has relatively low levels of moderate-size (Mj ≥ 5.0) earthquakes, with subregio...
